treasures in Heaven (3 Nephi 13:19-21)

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and thieves break through and steal; But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt and where thieves do not break through and steal.  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." 3 Nephi 13: 19-21

prosperity is a promised blessing that follows belief (faith) and obedience (2 Chronicles 20:20; 2 Nephi 4:4)

"... Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe in His prophets, so shall ye prosper ." 2 Chronicles 20:20 " Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; and inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence ." 2 Nephi 4:4

Scriptures should give us hope

"For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." Romans 15:4 "And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses...for I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning...hear ye the words of the prophet, which were written unto all the house of Israel, and liken them unto yourselves, that ye may have hope..." 1 Nephi 19:23-24

Believe in God (Mosiah 4:9)

Believe in God; believe that He is, and that He created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that He has all wisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which The Lord can comprehend. Mosiah 4:9

He employeth no servant there (2 Nephi 9:41)

O  then,  my  beloved  brethren,  a come  unto  the  Lord,  the  Holy  One.  Remember  that  his  paths  are    righteous.  Behold,  the  b way  for  man  is  c narrow ,  but  it  lieth  in  a  straight  course  before  him,  and  the  keeper  of  the  d gate  is  the  Holy  One  of  Israel;  and  he  employeth  no  servant  there;  and  there  is  none  other  way  save  it  be  by  the  gate;  for  he  cannot  be  deceived,  for  the  Lord  God  is  his  name. 2 Nephi 9:41

men are free; the devil seeks the misery of all men (2 Nephi 2:27)

...men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man.  And they are free to chose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to chose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. 2 Nephi 2:27

"as long as the earth shall stand." (Maxwell)

For my part, I am glad the book will be with us “as long as the earth shall stand.” I need and want additional time. For me, towers, courtyards, and wings await inspection. My tour of it has never been completed. Some rooms I have yet to enter, and there are more flaming fireplaces waiting to warm me. Even the rooms I have glimpsed contain further furnishings and rich detail yet to be savored. There are panels inlaid with incredible insights and design and decor dating from Eden. There are also sumptuous banquet tables painstakingly prepared by predecessors which await all of us. Yet, we as Church members sometimes behave like hurried tourists, scarcely venturing beyond the entry hall to the mansion. May we come to feel as a whole people beckoned beyond the entry hall. May we go inside far enough to hear clearly the whispered truths from those who have “slumbered,” which whisperings will awaken in us individually the life of discipleship as never before. by faith all things are fulfilled (Ether 12:3-4)

... by   faith  all things are fulfilled— Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with   surety   hope   for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which   hope   cometh of   faith , maketh an   anchor   to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in   good works , being led to   glorify   God. Ether 12:3-4

We must be different in order to make a difference in the world (3 Nephi 12:13-16)

13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose its savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay,but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house; 16 Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. 3 Nephi 12:13-16

The God of the 4th Watch (S. Michael Wilcox)

The scriptures are our Father in Heaven’s letters; only He knows more than I did as a father what you and I would need.  There are times in our lives when we need to open the letter and communicate with our Father in Heaven, and understand what He is like and His concern for us.  I would like to share this morning, with you, four letters from my Father in Heaven that have been very important to me—that I hope will be indicative of the power that the scriptures can be for us as we face different trials and challenges of our lives.  The first letter is called "The Fourth Watch." That letter comes from the sixth chapter of Mark.  The Savior has fed the five thousand that day, and in the late afternoon, early evening, He is sending his apostles down into the ship. He will dismiss the multitude. He wishes to pray that evening, and then He will meet the apostles a little later on the shore and they are to pick Him up.  In late afternoon, early evening, the apostles get on the sh

ye are free, ye are permitted to act for yourselves (Helaman 14:30)

30  And now remember, remember, my brethren, that whosoever perisheth, perisheth unto  himself ; and whosoever doeth iniquity, doeth it unto himself; for behold, ye are  free ; ye are permitted to act for yourselves; for behold, God hath given unto you a  knowledge  and he hath made you free.   31  He hath given unto you that ye might  know  good from evil, and he hath given unto you that ye might  choose  life or death; and ye can do good and be  restored  unto that which is good, or have that which is good restored unto you; or ye can do evil, and have that which is evil restored unto you. Helaman 14:30

Love. Healing. Help. Love. (Holland)

Prophecies regarding the last days often refer to large-scale calamities such as earthquakes or famines or floods. These in turn may be linked to widespread economic or political upheavals of one kind or another. But there is one kind of latter-day destruction that has always sounded to me more personal than public, more individual than collective—a warning, perhaps more applicable inside the Church than outside it. The Savior warned that in the last days even those of the covenant, the very elect, could be deceived by the enemy of truth. 1 If we think of this as a form of spiritual destruction, it may cast light on another latter-day prophecy. Think of the heart as the figurative center of our faith, the poetic location of our loyalties and our values; then consider Jesus’s declaration that in the last days “men’s hearts [shall fail] them.” 2   The encouraging thing, of course, is that our Father in Heaven knows all of these

What is a testimony good for? (Uchtdorf)

A testimony provides proper perspective, motivation, and a solid foundation on which to build a life of purpose and personal growth. It is a constant source of confidence, a true and faithful companion during good times and bad. A testimony provides us with a reason for hope and gladness. It helps us cultivate a spirit of optimism and happiness and enables us to rejoice in the beauties of nature. A testimony motivates us to choose the right at all times and in all circumstances. It motivates us to draw nearer to God, allowing Him to draw nearer to us (see  James 4:8 ). Our personal testimony is a protective shield, and like an iron rod it is guiding us safely through darkness and confusion. Nephi’s testimony gave him the courage to stand up and be counted as one who obeys the Lord. He did not murmur, doubt, or fear no matter what the circumstances. When times got tough he said, “I will go and do [what] the Lord [has] commanded, for I know that the Lord … shall prepare a way … [to

The Light of Christ (Packer)

Regardless of whether this inner light, this knowledge of right and wrong, is called the Light of Christ, moral sense, or conscience, it can direct us to moderate our actions–unless, that is, we subdue it or silence it…. “Every man, woman, and child of every nation, creed, or color–everyone, no matter where they live or what they believe or what they do–has within them the imperishable Light of Christ. deliverance through faith (Eyring)

When you're experiencing a severe trial, ask yourself this question: "Am I trying to do what the Lord would have me do?" If you're not, then adjust your course. But if you are, remember the boy outside the walls of Jerusalem who turned to his brothers and said, "I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them." (1 Nephi 3:7.) I bear you my testimony that the Lord will always prepare a way for you to escape from the trials you will be given if you understand two things.  One is that you need to be on the Lord's errand. The second thing you need to understand is that the escape will almost never be out of the trial; it will usually be through it. If you pray to have the experience removed altogether, you may not find the way prepared for you. Instead, you need to pray to
