"I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee" (Monson, Joshua 1:5)

"Whether it is the best of times or the worst of times, He is with us. He has promised that this will never change." —Thomas S. Monson, " "I Will Not Fail Thee, nor Forsake Thee" " There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with  a Moses ,  so  I will be  b with thee : I will not fail thee, nor  c forsake  thee. the new covenant (Jeremiah 31)

31  ¶Behold, the days come, saith the  Lord , that I will make a  a new   b covenant  with the house of  c Israel , and with the house of Judah:   32  Not according to the  a covenant  that I made with their fathers in the day  that  I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the  Lord :   33  But this  shall be  the  a covenant  that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the  Lord , I will put my  b law  in their inward parts, and write it in their  c hearts ; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.   34  And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the  Lord : for they shall all  a know  me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the  Lord : for I will forgive their  b iniquity , and I will remember their sin no more. "Remember Lot's Wife" (Holland)

As a scriptural theme for this discussion, I have chosen the second-shortest verse in all of holy scripture. I am told that the shortest verse—a verse that every missionary memorizes and holds ready in case he is called on spontaneously in a zone conference—is John 11:35: “Jesus wept.” Elders, here is a second option, another shortie that will dazzle your mission president in case you are called on two zone conferences in a row. It is Luke 17:32, where the Savior cautions, “Remember Lot’s wife.” Hmmm. What did He mean by such an enigmatic little phrase? To find out, I suppose we need to do as He suggested. Let’s recall who Lot’s wife was. The original story, of course, comes to us out of the days of Sodom and Gomorrah, when the Lord, having had as much as He could stand of the worst that men and women could do, told Lot and his family to flee because those cities were about to be destroyed. “Escape for thy life,” the Lord said, “ look not behind thee  . . . ; escape to the mou

God's anger (Maxwell)

It is customary, even understandable, when we read of God's indignation and anger to think of it in terms of an angry mortal father and not ponder it much more.  Some even mutter about Old Testament "tribalism," mistakenly thinking of God as being personally piqued or offended at some act of wickedness or stupidity because He has told us to behave otherwise.  This is erroneous, bumper-sticker theology.   Simply because we are, so often, angry at a wrong done to us, we [wrongly] assume the same about God's anger.   Neal A. Maxwell, "Sermons Not Spoken," p. 83

Incredible aloneness lay at the heart of the Great Atonement (Maxwell)

When  Jesus comes  again  in  rem inding  red attire, there will b e  a spectacular solar display a nd  stars will fall from their  places  in  the heavens. What wil l  then be evoked will not be an   exclamation over the solar di splay. Rather,  from human lips  praise will flow for Jesus' lov ing-kindness,  for His perfect  goodness. Then, the scriptures a ssure us  and tell us how long w e  will go on praising Jesus fo r  that Atonement: "forever  and  ever." (Mosiah 2:24; D&C 128: 23.)  The one thing He will men tion  when He comes again in maj esty  and power will have nothin g  to do with how He suffered in   the scourging, nothing to do  with the vinegar and gall or an y  of those things. Instead, His   voice will be heard to say, " I  have trodden the winepress al one,  and none was with me" ( Isa.  63:3).  Incredible alonene ss  lay at the heart of the Grea t  Atonement, and Jesus endured  it, because He let His will be swallowed up in the will of

Psalms 19

simple duties--the Gospel is not complicated

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8 Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work.  And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.  Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and the willing mind; and the willing and obedient shall eat the good of the land of Zion in these last days.
